Tony Chavez

Tony Chavez, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 27, 2021at home with loved ones in attendance. He was born and raised in Carrizozo, New Mexico and attended St. Rita's School and Carrizozo High.  After high school Tony joined the National Guard and from there he went into the regular army and trained at Fort Ord in Monteray, CA.  He came back home to Carrizozo for a few short years, then moved to Alamogordo.  Tony loved sports and he coached the St. Jude's girl's softball team in Alamogordo taking them all the way to state.

In 1990 he moved to Merced, CA and lived there for the next 18 years.  During his years in Merced he trained through the Citizen's Police Academy and for 3 years served his community as a volunteer police officer.  He also was active at the Boys and Girls Club in Atwater, CA as a volunteer coach for boys basketball.

In 2008 Tony returned to Alamogordo to be closer to family.  He has been a member of Eternity Baptist Church for the past 12 years.  He loved to share his faith with whoever would listen and tell them how God had changed his life.

He is survived by his five children, Neiufa, Rachel, Dion, Delbert and Gloria.  He is also survived by his wife of 30 years, Ellen Chavez.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
