Ralph A. (Rick) Vandewart, 72
Longtime Area Rancher Ralph A. (Rick) Vandewart, passed away June 29, 2014, after an extended illness; He was 72 years of age.
He is survived by his wife, Tip, of the home and sister Sue Vandewart of San Antonio, NM. In addition, he leaves a niece, Robin Miranda, nephews Jon Romero, Mike and Jake Jones, seven great nieces and nephews, thirteen first cousins and many kind friends.
He was a graduate of Artesia High School and attended New Mexico Military Institute and NMSU. He worked for the U. S. Forest Service after college while running a family ranch at Rocky Arroyo near Sitting Bull Falls. Later he ran and co-owned the family ranch in the Sacramento Mountains until his death.
Rick was one of the great "characters" of the area. He was known for his sharp wit that could be rather barbed at times and a quick temper that cooled as quickly as it ignited. There was no one else quite like him; he will be terribly missed.
A memorial for family only will be held at the ranch later this month.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: the Assurance Home of Roswell, 1000 E. 18th St., Roswell, NM 88201 or the charity of your choice.
