Opal Pauline Devenport

Opal Pauline Devenport, formerly of Livingston, TX passed away at her home in Alamogordo, NM on March 10, 2012 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. She was born on June 20, 1934 in Potosi, Missouri. Her parents were John Fred Moss and Effie Marie (Lewis) Moss. She married James Leroy Devenport on March 12, 1960.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings including a brother, Virgil Edward Moss; and two sisters, Claire Melissa Manes and Katherine Lucille Simpson. She is survived by her husband, James, sisters-in-law Maudie Moss, Faye Gentry (Jeff), Linda Narens (Robert), and Carol Sue Locke (Robert). She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, also grands and great-grands.

In Livingston, she worked at Wal-Mart and was very active at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. After moving to Alamogordo in 1999, she worked for Gentry Construction, the IMAX Theater, and later became a nursing home ombudsman. After retirement and never one to settle for the rocking chair, she volunteered at the Senior Center, helped to raise funds for the exercise building, conducted a strength training class, and joined the Mayors Committee on Aging. Lastly, she volunteered as a foster grandparent through the RSVP program.

Over her lifetime she dabbled in nearly every conceivable hobby at one time or another-genealogy, photography, stained glass, painting, needlework, ceramics, modeling, gourmet cooking, gardening, decorating and crafting.

Opal and James shared devotionals every morning. As James' eyesight dwindled Opal continued to read the scriptures and daily readings from Streams in the Desert. She also enriched James' days by reading aloud several books from the Wagon's West series.

Opal will forever be deeply missed by all her family and many friends who knew and loved her. One nephew described his Aunt Opal as real pistol, a loveable lady with a feisty personality. And thus, her memory is forever sealed in our hearts.

Cremation has taken place. Opal's extended family will gather together at a later date in celebration of her life. At Opal's request, there will be no public memorial. Those who desire may make a Gideon Bible donation in her name.
