Lucio Maes Obituary

Lucio L. Maes

Those we love do not go away; they walk beside us every day.  Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear. Lucio L. Maes, 93, of Tularosa, NM, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2022. Lucio was born on May 31, 1928, in Reventon, Lincoln County, NM.

Lucio enlisted in the 304th Army Air Corps Base Unit. He retired from Holloman Air Force Base in 1986 after 38 years of service. He was a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Lucio had a great love for music and playing the drums. He played for:  The Chancellors, The Tularosa Ramblers, The Tularosa Playboys, Rocket City Playboys and The Calvin Boles Band. Lucio also played the drums for Johnny Paycheck and Glen Campbell.

Lucio found it especially important to spend time with his family. Family trips would be going to Mexico visiting the beautiful cities of Chihuahua, Mexico City, and Acapulco. Lucio also loved to spend the 4th of July up in Mescalero. The grandchildren would be excited to receive a call to get ready to go to Caballo Lake, or Elephant Butte Lake were great memories where made. Grandpo Lucio was always available for all his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Whether cheering them on at a sports banquet or sport event, attending their Christmas programs, Religious Ceremonies or just getting them to their appointments. Grandpo Lucio was always ready to help in any way that he could.

Lucio also enjoyed the excitement around the grounds of the racetrack. Whether he was at Sunland Park or Ruidoso Downs, or just at home watching the Kentucky Derby, Horse Racing brought great delight to Lucio’s heart. Besides betting on the horses, Lucio could be located at the Casino where everyone knew him as Grandpo Lucio, and he called everyone Mijo or Mija.

Lucio is preceded in death by his parents Hilario and Maria (Lueras) Maes, his siblings Juanita Delgado, Anastacia Maes, Hilario Maes Jr. and his wife Elvira Nuñez Maes.  Lucio is survived by three daughters, Cecilia Beltran and husband Carlos, Esther Maes, and Jesusita Maes: three sons, Robert Garcia and wife Margaret, Juan Maes and wife Virginia, and Robert Maes and wife Cynthia.  He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, fifty-six great grandchildren and eighteen great great grandchildren.

On April 1st, 2022, at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church, a Rosary led by Mrs. Chavez will start at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Catholic Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will be located at the Catholic Cemetery in Alamogordo, NM. Cremation has taken place under the direction of PCS.
